PTSD Treatments at Wells Medicine
A core focus of our practice at Wells Medicine is effective medicine for trauma care, including PTSD. We specialize in interventional procedures and services demonstrated to provide rapid and substantial relief for many people.
The Impact of PTSD
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can be a terrible burden – for those suffering with symptoms, as well as for their loved ones. It can interfere with daily activities, work, important events, and relationships, and it can significantly affect your sense of security and control – compounding effects in a negative feedback loop.
Around 5 in every 100 adults may have PTSD in a given year, according to the US Department of Veterans Affairs. PTSD is often associated with veterans, but it can, and does, affect many other people. It can arise from all kinds of traumatic events including car accidents, abuse, sexual assault, physical assault, or witnessing others experiencing injury or death.
Many people fail to respond to first-line treatments for PTSD such as psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy. While valuable, these modes of treatment may not make an appreciable difference and can leave you suffering and frustrated.
Symptoms of PTSD
PTSD may be diagnosed when a person has persistent symptoms in response to a traumatic event or events that negatively impact their life. Traumatic events can have a variety of significant and sustained physical and psychological impacts on our lives and may warrant treatment for a variety of specific diagnoses – and in some cases without a diagnosis. Symptoms of PTSD may vary from person to person.
Symptoms May Include
- Intrusive memories or flashbacks
- Nightmares or disturbing dreams
- Significant emotional distress to reminders of the trauma
- Significant physical reactions to reminders of the trauma
- Avoidance of places, people, activities or thoughts that trigger memories of the trauma
Symptoms May Also Include
- Persistent negative thoughts
- Feelings of detachment from others
- Hypervigilance
- Pronounced startle responses
- Self-destructive behavior (such as substance abuse)
Treatment Options for PTSD at Wells Medicine
We offer advanced interventional treatments and services.
SGB / Stellate Ganglion Blocks
Stellate Ganglion Blocks, also abbreviated SGB and sometimes called Sympathetic Nerve Reset, are an exceptional treatment option for PTSD that directly target the body’s fight or flight response. A growing body of clinical and academic research shows that this targeted set of blocks can rapidly and significantly reduce symptoms – often lasting for 6 months or more.
TMS / Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
TMS is a non-invasive procedure that uses targeted magnetic field impulses to stimulate neurons in the brain. A growing body of research supports the use of TMS to effectively treat PTSD, especially when coupled with depression and/or anxiety.
Psychiatry / Pharmacotherapy
Multiple FDA-approved and off-label medications are available to treat PTSD. A knowledgeable psychiatrist can recommend appropriate new medications and/or adjustments to your medications – on their own or to complement other therapies in a multi-pronged approach.
Psychotherapy / Talk Therapy
Psychotherapy, or talk therapy, can work well on its own or to improve or extend the results of other treatments. There is little substitute for the versatility of talk therapy, and while it may not provide the direct and significant results that interventional treatments and medications may provide, it can be indispensable for achieving and maintaining long-term mental health.
Integrated Support
Integrated support with Wells Medicine is a combination of functional medicine and coaching designed to support and extend our care throughout more aspects of your life. Integrated Support can be an excellent addition if you believe you’d like more comprehensive support, or if you know you’d benefit from regular sustained guidance in addressing your mental health.
Multi-Modal Treatments
Multiple treatments in combination or series are often a good choice – whether finding the best treatment fit, trying a belt and suspenders approach, or taking advantage of synergies between treatments – such as using the benefits of neuroplasticity from ketamine infusions to pursue ketamine assisted psychotherapy.
Other Options and Referrals
Other treatments may be appropriate – from different types of talk therapy, group therapy, alternative therapies and experimental treatments or medical trials. We have a strong and growing referral network for our patients.
