We work to make IVs comfortable, including using the smallest sizes available.
For some people, intravenous access (IVs) and needles can be bothersome or even frightening. We take steps to make the process as comfortable as possible.
The smallest gauge IV
IVs come in many different sizes. Most people have experience with IVs that they’ve had during a blood draw, donating blood, or in an emergency room or hospital setting for surgery. These scenarios use IVs that are all much larger than what we need for ketamine infusions at Wells Medicine.
The gauge, or size, of our IVs is the smallest gauge they make commercially available. This size is what is often used for neonates or newborns in the hospital.
Most people are surprised by how little our IVs hurt because they’re accustomed to the much larger IV needles for access that they’ve encountered in other, more-typical healthcare situations. We don’t need a large IV because ketamine infusions use only a relatively small amount of fluid over the duration of the infusion.
IVs are Flexible
Only a thin, flexible sheath remains for the duration of IV access. The needle used to place the IV is removed immediately. You don’t need to worry about holding your arm rigid or sitting usually still. You can sit normally throughout an infusion – including all the little movements we make when we normally sit for a while.
Will the IV access be Obvious?
Many patients worry about large bruising or visible signs of their infusion, or that their infusions might make it look like they have track marks.
We try to use the same location, when possible, and we hold pressure after removing the IV to help avoid bruising.
The visible signs of your IV may vary, but we work to minimize them.
IV location
We are very capable at preforming IVs. If you prefer the placement on the inside of your elbow, or on your hand, or on a particular arm, we’re happy to be flexible and accommodate as best we can whenever possible.
We care
We work hard to make the experience pleasant and efficient. We really do care about your comfort, and we think that that makes a difference. We’re very glad to speak with you about any concerns around needles or IVs, and please know we’re well trained, we’re attentive, and we work to do our best for you.
