Do Stellate Ganglion Blocks Hurt?

Stellate ganglion blocks feel a bit like a flu shot, and we’ll guide you through the procedure the whole time.

Does a stellate ganglion block hurt?

A stellate ganglion block feels a little bit like an IV or a flu shot.

The skin is numbed prior to treatment using a very small needle. For the procedure itself, another small needle is used to inject the medication into the neck. Patients may feel a sense of movement, or of pressure as an ultrasound probe is used to guide the injection. Other than this, patients don’t feel much of anything at all.

The doctor will distract and guide you through the procedure to make the process as comfortable as possible.

There may be some mild soreness or pressure in the neck in the days following treatment, as a result of the additional fluid that is injected into the neck, like the feeling of a bruise as it heals. However, patients are able to comfortably move and rotate their head and neck, even right after the procedure.

There will be two small marks on the neck at the site of the injections, almost like a vampire bite, for a few days following the procedure that will heal quickly.
