The Mood Effects of GLP-1 Medications - An Update

New research on GLP-1 medications has found mood side effects of depression and suicidal ideation. This new data may influence the conversation of whether GLP-1 medications are right for you.

New data on side effects

In an earlier post, we discussed the mood effects of GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic, Mounjaro, and many others. We shared our thoughts on the benefits and drawbacks of these medications according to the limited existing data.

New published data has shown that these medications can have the side effect of increasing depression and suicidal ideation.

If you are on one of these medications, it is important to be aware of these potential side effects. Although we thought that these medications simply decreased gastric emptying and increased feelings of satiety, they also work by decreasing the reward of food — and perhaps the reward of other things, too.

Where GLP-1s can still be helpful

For some of our patients on anti-psychotic and antidepressant medications that cause significant weight gain, GLP-1 medications have continued to be helpful.

GLP-1s have allowed these patients to stay on their psychiatric medications — including Zyprexa, Remeron, Paxil, Abilify, and others — without experiencing a significant weight gain that might make it difficult to feel like themselves anymore.

Some patients who do experience mood side effects from GLP-1 medications have still been able to receive benefit from these medications on a lower dose, with less of the mood side effects.

There are other options

If you are experiencing mood side effects from your GLP-1 medication, it is important to speak with your provider. There are other medications that can be prescribed that are still effective for weight loss and can help you stay on the psychiatric medications that have been effective for you.
