Bring Your Support-Person To Treatment

Can you bring someone with you to your appointment? Yes — and their presence during treatment is up to you.

Can I bring someone with me to treatment?

We’re happy for patients to bring a support-person with them for any portion of an appointment at Wells Medicine.

Many people will want to bring a friend or family member or someone else to drive them home after their visit. Others will ask that their support person be with them for either the discussion before an appointment, or the procedure itself, but not both. And still, others ask that their support person be with them throughout the visit.

Many people just want to go internal and not feel beholden to interacting with the other person they brought with them.

Some people will want their support-person join them mid-way through a procedure. We encourage patients to let us know when this happens, and we’re happy to call them in from the waiting room to the treatment room.

Some people will want their support-person with them until the moment of a stellate ganglion block, but their support-person may not do well with needles and may need to step out.

All of this okay!

We just ask that the support-person, for any procedure, be very quiet and respectful for the patient’s sake and to respect that the experience, for ketamine infusions and nitrous oxide treatments in particular, is a journey. They should avoid asking the patient lots of questions like “What are you thinking?” “What are you seeing?” “What are you noticing?” “What’s going on?” and disrupting the experience. They should respect that the patient may want to tell them, or may want to sit quietly and have their support-person simply hold space for them.

Therapy, Integration, and Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy

Some patients work with their therapist at an appointment — before or directly after a ketamine infusion treatment. Many others work with their therapists in the 72 hour window after an infusion, when neuroplasticity is greatest, at their therapist’s office or by telehealth. It can be very useful to work with a therapist around an infusion — whether it is a form of general psychotherapy, or is more focused on integration, or is a version of Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP).

We can often accommodate providers in the office, we are very glad to collaborate with our patients’ extended care team, and we ask that they contact us to coordinate.
