If you are returning to ketamine treatment after a long break, you may need to start with more than one infusion to find relief.
Returning to treatment
When patients first start ketamine treatment, they begin with an initiation series of 6 ketamine treatments spaced closely together. After this initial series, patients typically move to a maintenance schedule of 1 treatment every 3-5 weeks.
For patients who are returning to ketamine treatment after a long break, just one treatment may not be enough to find relief. We follow a general rule of thumb for how many closely-spaced ketamine treatments these patients should have.
If it has been more than a year since your last ketamine treatment, you may need 2-3 treatments close together before moving to maintenance spacing.
If it has been less than a year since your last ketamine treatment, you may only need 1-2 treatments close together before you can move back to a maintenance schedule.
Many variables like medications, substances you’re using at home, and events going on your life play a role in the degree of benefit you see from treatment. The amount of close-together infusions a patient needs when they’re returning to treatment can vary widely. We will check in to see how you are feeling and if you are ready to move to a maintenance schedule, or if we may need to keep you appointments a little closer together for a while.
