How To Get Started With Ketamine Treatments

Ketamine is used to treat a variety of mental health conditions, including depression and anxiety. The process of getting started with treatment is simple.

Getting Started

We love to hear from new patients by phone, email, or text at any time.

When you’re ready to get started we’ll ask to speak with you by phone to review important information and answer your questions. We’ll let you know how you should prepare for your first appointment, such as to refrain from eating or drinking before an infusion and to have a ride prepared to go home after the infusion. We’ll also use this call to help you schedule an initial series of treatments.

We do not require a referral to get started, although we’re always happy to have one. We’re also happy to speak with your other providers if and when appropriate. We welcome the opportunity to work collaboratively with your extended care team.

New patient paperwork

After scheduling your first appointment (and in some cases before you schedule) we’ll ask you to complete onboarding forms including relevant medical history and other pertinent information. Many patients who come to Wells Medicine have a long history of treatment and diagnosis from their providers, and we’ll ask you for some of that information on these forms.

On this paperwork, you will be asked to list current medical or mental health providers. This may include providers such as a primary care doctor, psychiatrist, psychologist, or therapist.

Consultations

We do not require a separate consultation before starting treatments. Each appointment includes a consultation with the doctor before the treatment itself. We’ll use this time to review additional important information, to discuss details of your treatment plan, and to address questions or concerns you may have.

Your Ketamine Infusion Appointment

  • Each ketamine infusion appointment typically takes about an hour and a half in the office. Your first appointment may be a little longer – perhaps closer to two hours.
  • You first meet with the front desk to complete some paperwork, make payment for the visit, and schedule future appointments.
  • You’ll go back to your room, and talk with the doctor to discuss items they’ll want to review and to discuss questions or concerns you may have.
  • The doctor then places an IV, connects you to the monitor, and starts your ketamine infusion.
  • The active infusion typically lasts about 40 minutes, with some infusions for pain, for instance, lasting longer.
  • When the active infusion is finished, you’ll rest in your room as you wait for the effects of the ketamine to diminish, which often takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
  • When the immediate symptoms of the medication have subsided, you are welcome to leave to go home with your ride.
  • Friends or family members may wait in the waiting room, or join you during any part of the process.
