What if depression comes back?

What if Depression Comes Back?

The skills and resources you develop during treatment make you into a different person, with different ways of handling the challenges of mental health.

It won’t be the same

When patients come in for treatment and find that they’re finally feeling a little bit better, many develop a fear of their depression coming back. They say, “I never want to go back to where I was. I never want to be that person again. I never want to feel those things again.”

To these patients, we emphasize that — no matter what comes in life — you are a different person than you were before.

Through life, we are always gaining experiences, wisdom, and becoming different people. Whatever circumstances you’ve been through, whether that’s depression, or anxiety, or overcoming addiction — those things change us as people. Gaining access to new resources and developing new coping strategies change us as people, too.

Throughout and outside of treatment, we encourage cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, exercise, and avoiding alcohol, marijuana, and benzodiazepines. We encourage getting out, prioritizing sleep, and decreasing electronics. These skills and resources, in addition to new support systems and access to interventional treatments, are available to patients when they may not have been available before.

Through the recovery process, patients can see hope and get a sense that there is life beyond depression and anxiety. This experience changes us into a new person as well.

While nothing physically may have changed around you, or nothing structurally has changed around your world — your thoughts, perceptions, and perspective on life have changed. These factors make you into a different person who is able to handle new situations, and not go through the same depression or anxiety that you did before.

We like to emphasize to patients that it’s not about waiting for the other shoe to drop. It’s about knowing that when it does, you will be a different person, and you don’t need to go back to the same depression or anxiety where you were before.
