Side effects of a stellate ganglion block

How to Know if Your Stellate Ganglion Block Worked | SGB Side Effects

We expect to see some side effects following a stellate ganglion block, and they are a good way to know that the procedure has been done correctly.

Horner’s syndrome

A stellate ganglion block is a procedure that targets and temporarily blocks a bundle of sympathetic nerves in the neck called the stellate ganglion. This acts as a reboot or reset of the sympathetic nervous system. 70-80% of patients experience a significant decrease in their symptoms of PTSD or hypervigilance, and SGBs have also been found to be effective for reducing symptoms of severe anxiety as well as other conditions.

While there is no way to know for certain whether a stellate ganglion block will be effective to treat your symptoms without trying it, there is a good way to know that the procedure itself has been performed correctly.

After a stellate ganglion block, patients can expect to see side effects referred to as Horner’s syndrome. Horner’s syndrome occurs when the sympathetic chain is blocked in the neck, as we produce with a stellate ganglion block.

Symptoms will occur on the same side of the body as the block and may include:

  • Redness and droopiness of the eye
  • Stuffiness in the nasal cavity
  • Thickness or hoarseness of the voice
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Numbness in the chin, jaw, and ear
  • Tinnitus, buzzing, or a change in sound of the ear

These symptoms will peak in intensity during the first 30 minutes after the procedure. We will ask you to sit and wait with us in the clinic as these side effects set in. Symptoms will gradually decrease over the course of about 8 hours as the long-acting anesthetic used to perform the nerve block breaks down and leaves your system.

Benefits of a stellate ganglion block may last 2-6 months or longer, and are sometimes noticeable immediately following the procedure.
