Dropping the rope  – Visualization Exercise

Dropping the Rope – Visualization Exercise

A tug of war requires two parties. Evaluate the resistance you give to relationships or situations in your life and see if you might benefit from just dropping the rope.

This exercise can help with releasing expectations in a relationship.

Many people feel like they’re being pulled into situations or pulled around in relationships, but a tug of war requires the participation of two parties. If you’re not enjoying the situation or relationship dynamic you’re in, the key to changing it may be as simple as letting go of your resistance and dropping the rope.

This is not to say that you should allow people or situations to treat you badly. Instead, we invite you to take a step back and evaluate whether your resistance to or participation in a situation is perpetuating your circumstance.

For example, if you’re in an argument with someone and you really want them to apologize or behave in a certain way regardless of their actual behavior — is that holding on to the rope? If you’re in a situation with others where you’re burdened with exceptions for yourself to do something or react in a certain way — is that holding onto the rope?

‘Dropping the rope’ may not mean immediate peace or stability in your relationships. Any change in a relationship can create unsettled waters. Just as creating boundaries is wonderful, it can also destabilize a relationship by changing and upsetting the rules you’ve established over time.

Dropping the rope can give you a greater sense of control and sense of agency over the role you play within your relationships. While it can be especially difficult to do in the short term, over time, it can be a great benefit to let go of the resistance you add to troublesome relationships with people or situations and to move on from those.

When you find yourself in a tug of war, visualize dropping the rope and see if it helps.
