Colors of Ketamine Treatment

Many people see colors during their ketamine infusions. What these colors are, and how they change over treatment, can offer interesting insight.

Seeing colors during ketamine

Anyone can create colors by closing their eyes and pressing gently on them with their fingers. You can see flashes of light as the optic nerve is perceiving things.

Some patients see colors during their ketamine infusion.

Some people see very dark purples, almost into blacks. Some people see bright lights. Some see black, almost with stars in them. Some see greens and pinks and purples, or pinks fading into purple. These colors may be naturalistic, such as greens that feel like trees growing, or pinks that are like pink fluffy clouds.

Some patients experience these colors as halos around different people or objects in the room. Some patients describe blobs of colors that are moving around or patterns. Colors may appear in flashes, or in a movement that hints at color.

Colors may correlate with the music that is playing. In medicine, we describe this as synesthesia, where one sensory organ has an effect on another. Colors may create music, smells may create sound, or any other combination of senses.

For patients who are very visual and experience these colors during ketamine infusions, they may find that their colors change over the course of treatment. Over the years, we’ve noticed some common trends or patterns with these changes. Patients may start treatment seeing a bit more black, and other darker colors, and over the course of several treatments it fades into lighter colors, pastels, or pinks.

For some patients, these changes are meaningful. We’ve heard them described as “aura cleansing,”, moving from darkness to lightness. We’ve found that these patients can sometimes create more colors during their infusions if they’re trying to.

For other patients, these colors are just colors. They’ll tell us, “Oh, it was all green today,” or “Oh, it was all pink today.”

There is no right color or wrong color, but it can be very interesting to take notice of what colors you see during ketamine infusions.
