Insurance covers TMS in some cases but coverage is limited. Insurance is unlikely to cover advanced protocols, rapid treatments, complex cases, off-label indications, or other conditions and indications. A direct patient care model can offer the best available approach to TMS without insurance.
Does Insurance Cover TMS?
Insurance covers some forms of TMS for some indications. Insurance does not typically cover accelerated TMS.
Accelerated TMS is shown to be far more effective, far more convenient, may be the best available option for many people, and can remain accessible. And while insurers don’t broadly cover accelerated protocols, some people pursue, and are able to secure, direct reimbursement from their insurance company in full or in part.
Insurance for Conventional and Accelerated TMS
Insurance companies may cover TMS for specific indications, with a specific kind of TMS treatment, with pre-authorization, where the patient typically comes in for treatment once a day, every weekday, for many weeks (often 4, 6 or even 8 weeks). This can be a helpful option for some, but may not be the best available option for many people.
Insurance is less likely or unlikely to cover:
* Accelerated TMS: one-week, one-day and other protocols
* Off-label protocols and indications: such as those not yet FDA approved
* Maintenance or ongoing treatments
When you must come in once a day, every day, for many weeks, it can be a more difficult treatment regime. People often don’t see benefits for up to the first twenty treatments of TMS. With a conventional treatment schedule, this is a very long wait: nearly a month into treatment. In the mean time, you must take time off every day, whether it’s work, school, or responsibilities at home, to come into the clinic… the wait to see results can be so long and inconvenient in these cases, that providers describe to us the substantial work they must do to convince patients to keep coming back in every day until results start to materialize.
A much more efficient and more effective way of providing TMS care is accelerated TMS. The one-week accelerated TMS treatment schedule is ten sessions a day for five days, resulting in fifty treatments for the week. The one-day accelerated TMS treatment schedule is 20 sessions of TMS for a single day. In each case, the schedule is dramatically shorter and results are demonstrated to be far better than conventional TMS in studies to date. Results are not only achieved more rapidly, but limited studies show far more effective results that continue long after the treatment.
